Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
