Israel Launches Assault on Iran as Explosions Reported in the Capital

In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.

Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran

According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.

“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without immediately provide additional information.

Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events

This event occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events preceding this attack include:

  • American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
  • Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
  • Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
  • Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.

Iranian Response

In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.

These developments remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
