England along with Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
